Why Adelaide Has Salt Damp in Adelaide

The 2008 joint heritage guide puts the difference down to climate and soil: Adelaide has hot drying summers and very salty soils, whereas in Sydney the more humid climate and lower salt levels mean the decay rates are slower. That is why the salts already in a wall are a question for any quote here.

What why Adelaide has salt damp in Adelaide actually involves

The guide calls it salt damp, a term it says is widely used in South Australia for high salt concentrations associated with rising damp. It states the climate and soil reasons for Adelaide and says nothing about any single suburb, so this page makes no claim about one.

What the State did about failed treatments

The guide says that in South Australia in the 1960s and 1970s there were many cases of failed damp treatments because the salt damp problem was poorly understood, and that so many complaints were made to consumer affairs that the State government set up a Salt Damp Research Committee, which operated from 1974 to 1982. The article on that period sets out what the guide asks for now.

What to do with it

Ask a provider what the quote does about the salts. The council's fact sheet says the wall above a new damp course still contains salts deposited by decades of earlier rising damp, and the guide says that when salts abound, a course alone is not enough and excessive salts should be removed from above it. A quote that mentions only a new course has not answered that. The options page sets out what each source says about the course itself.

This page says nothing about how fast any given wall will decay or how salty the ground is at any address: no source read gives either at suburb level, and the guide is a general document written in 2008.
