Salt Damp Treatment in Port Adelaide

A cellar wall in Port Adelaide can be wet for a reason a wall above ground is not. The Department for Environment and Water's 2018 guidelines for the Port Adelaide State Heritage Area say many buildings there retain their original cellars and that salt damp is common in them due to groundwater table and subsoil conditions.

Permits and City of Port Adelaide Enfield rules

Whether a salt damp job at a given Port Adelaide address counts as development in the State Heritage Area is for Port Adelaide Enfield Council and Heritage South Australia to say. The guidelines state that an application is lodged with the council and then referred to Heritage South Australia.

Salt Damp Treatment around Port Adelaide

For a cellar the guidelines say to ensure it is ventilated and to apply a sacrificial plaster or limewash coating to absorb the moisture and salts, and, where the cellar is used for storage, to keep the area in front of the walls clear to allow air circulation and prevent further damp build-up. The line names ventilation and a sacrificial coat that absorbs, and no damp-proof course, so ask a provider what the quote assumes is feeding the wall and what it does about that.

The guidelines are also the source for what comes before the work. Where changes in the State Heritage Area constitute development, they say a statutory approval against the planning and building rules is required, lodged with Port Adelaide Enfield Council and referred to Heritage South Australia for heritage assessment, and that exemptions that might apply elsewhere do not apply in the area. This page does not say whether any address is inside it.
